Open, honest and transparent – that’s us. The incredible change occurring in Ethiopia could not happen without your donations, so here is exactly how we’ve spent them in 2015.
In 2015, we raised more than $2.2 million in public donations – our highest amount yet.
Through our ‘imagine 100%’ promise, every single cent of those donations went to program activities on the ground in Ethiopia.
Operating spending was covered by our endowment, support from our Leadership Circle, sponsorship, and donor travel expense payments.
Additional revenue came from the Ethiopian communities themselves. As part of our sustainability efforts we make sure our partner communities have ‘skin in the game’ and, through local fundraising, contribute at least 10% of the construction costs.
To ensure more donor dollars directly benefit Ethiopian children, we take a strict interpretation on what is an operating cost.
Under government guidelines, our operating costs are estimated to be 25%. Internally, however, we classify more of our costs – like occupancy and salaries – as operating costs, which we don’t spend your donations on. This strict definition means we can say, with integrity, that 100% of your donations go directly to our education programs in Ethiopian communities.
“I want to be a role model for other girls like me. My hope is that girls in my community have a chance to go to school and complete their education through to the end unlike their mothers who never had the chance.”
– Makida Adam
2015 was a big year for us, as we expanded our program significantly.
We partnered with 260 new schools across five new districts. That means we’re now transforming 487 schools and communities in Ethiopia.
Our work now reaches a quarter of a million children each year – that’s a 300% growth in impact in the last three years.
7 new schools completed, with five more under construction
6451 teachers, principals and community leaders trained
29,211 library books delivered
50 high school scholarships
27,705 out-of-school children enrolled
265,031 lives transformed
These are just some of our successes in 2015.
“Before they didn’t know any letter, now they can say every letter. Before they could not say any number, now they know every number. I hope my children will one day be doctors or engineers.”
– Tayib Adam, father of two sons aged four and six.
We run our charity like a business, and that means making smart investments in the right people and systems to get the job done.
The bulk of our operating expenses go towards the incredibly talented bunch we have making this transformation possible, including our lean team of five in Vancouver and 33 staff in Ethiopia. Other expenses are administration, including IT, marketing and fundraising, and travel to and in Ethiopia.
A big thank you to everyone who made 2015 such an incredible year.
None of this change would be possible without your support.
in 2016, we hope to do even more. We’ll build eight new schools and three standalone early childhood education centers, continue teacher training and leadership development across our districts, and expand our Girl Fund project to empower more young women.
It’s an incredibly exciting time as we build towards our goal that all Ethiopian children have access to quality education, free of foreign aid, by 2030.
